PRESIDENT'S CORNER

“Autumn…The Years last, loveliest smile”. - William Cullent Bryant

Well hello there Fall!

The kids are in full swing now with school and extra curricular activities, and so are our Hartshorn parents! As we race our kids from one activity to the next, we still manage to find time to volunteer and help out our amazing school. Hartshorn is so grateful for you! The children have had a very busy last few weeks! They enjoyed their ice cream social and put on their best smiles for picture day! Fall Family fun night was definitely FUN and the Jumpathon was a huge success. We had our first cultural arts assembly, The Earth Dome which educated the students about geography and environmental issues. What a great experience for our kids! Our week of Respect was amazing! The students were engaged in all different types of activities to encourage kindness, resolving conflicts and treat each other with respect. We would like to thank all of the students who participated in the Hartshorn Chess Team tryout and congratulations to this years winners! We know you will make Hartshorn proud!

The Caring Kids Learning Differences Program for 4th grade will be on Monday, October 23rd. This program shows students the importance of being a good friend in the classroom (especially to our classmates who may struggle with learning differences), around school, and out in the community. Our Annual Coat Drive is underway so now is the time to clean out those closets. The annual pie sale, embrace a foster child and the Thanksgiving food drive will all be starting up the first week of November so be on the look out! Please take note of the new date for Hartshorn’s Ladies Night Out Fundraiser which will be held on December 7th location TBD.             .

There will be a Board of Ed Candidate forum sponsored by the Millburn Township PTO Conference at the Millburn Public LibraryOctober 24th at 7:00PM and October 30th at 11:00AM.  We encourage you to attend and learn about the candidates running for the BOE. November 7th is Election Day so please don’t forget to vote!

Have a safe and happy Halloween with your families! We will be collecting candy for the troops again this year so please feel free to send in all that unwanted candy November 1st thru the 3rd!

Sincerely,

Loren Balady & Tamara Bigman

Boxes will be distributed on 10/27 and should be returned to homeroom teachers by 11/3.

  • Halloween Candy Collection, November 1-3: share your Halloween candy with troops serving overseas through Operation Shoebox of New Jersey

HARTSHORN SCIENCE EXPO

The Science Expo Committee is recruiting parent volunteers to make this year’s science expo a success! The Science Expo is a one-day event which is a cross between the Science Olympiad and a hands-on science museum with grade-specific activities. At last year’s event, students took part in fun challenges and there were demonstrations involving Drones, Robots and Coding.

This year’s expo is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2018.  There will be a minimal number of meetings as we understand that you have busy lives  inside and outside the home.  The only requirement is enthusiasm – no scientific expertise is necessary!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer your time for the Science Expo, please email Chairs Marni Kelman, Liby Cielo and Elsa Thomas at  Hartshornscienceexpo@gmail.com

ONGOING AT HARTSHORN

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT

Our ASE Fall program is well under way and we hope that all the students are enjoying the fun and enrichment the program provides. In the coming weeks we are going to send a survey asking for feedback on classes of interest and on the overall ASE program. In the meantime, we would love to hear your feedback on your children’s classes, the instructors, or the program itself so we can continually improve the program. Please email us at hartshornase@gmail.com if you have any suggestions or comments.

As a friendly reminder, we want to emphasize how important it is to pick up your children promptly at the 4:00 pm dismissal. In addition, please remember to arrive at Hartshorn by 2:45 pm to meet the ASE Supervisor on your scheduled day to volunteer. The policy is for you to find a replacement if you are unable to volunteer. The volunteer list is now posted in Membership Toolkit in the Volunteering section in the PTO Corner tab, or you can access it at this link: https://hartshornpto.membershiptoolkit.com/assets/00709/Documents/2017-2018/PTO_Programs/ASE/ASE_Volunteers_Fall2017.pdf

CHANGE AGENTS

Students make a difference! Our current group will continue work from last year and then a new group will be offered the opportunity to become involved mid- year. A notice will be sent then.

Open to all grades. Space is limited – 12 students.

Here are our focus areas:

Environmental Awareness – the students will work with Mr. Frattini on being environmentally conscientious. The groups will discuss recycling, beautification of the grounds and community, conservation, and ways to be healthy.

Ethics In Action –the students will discuss issues, create scenarios commonly encountered at the elementary school level and role-play these. Our Power of One theme and our steps to conflict resolution will be infused into the skits. These skits will be created, written and performed by students for students.

Random Acts of Kindness- the students will be engaged in making the world a better place through anonymous, random acts of kindness.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Mrs. Jill Canastra

A retired guidance counselor from Millburn Middle School, Mrs. Canastra volunteers each week and will serve as a resource for students, teachers, and parents. I worked with Mrs. Canastra at the middle school and she is top-notch! Mrs. Canastra is also former elementary school teacher. Her experiences as a mother and grandmother coupled with her professional experiences make her a perfect match for us. We’re extremely fortunate to have a knowledgeable, willing and personable professional!

Mrs. Emily Coughlin

Our school psychologists who help facilitate lunch bunches and assist with implementing the 4 steps to conflict resolution and our character initiatives. Mrs. Coughlin will also be assisting with implementing character education and conflict resolution lessons in classrooms and into practice!

Mrs. Mary Jane Reisler

Hartshorn’s “Strategies Intervention” instructor is a master teacher.  She is involved in Mentoring, our Take Charge program and our character initiatives.

At times, Mrs. Reisler, Mrs. Canastra, Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Coughlin and/or I may invite students to meet, have an recess game in the gym, or have a lunch-bunch in order for us to discuss our character initiatives, to work on skills necessary for successful conflict resolutions, or to just bring together a group of friends. This is completely voluntary and not punitive in any way, nor are students obligated to participate. This approach has students invested in "doing the right thing" since they are involved in the conversation about our school and the development of the ideas. All this falls under our school wide theme of The Power of One.

HAPPENINGS LAST MONTH

BIRTHDAY BOOKS

Many thanks to the parents who supported the birthday book program this year.  Because of your generosity, 239 new books will be purchased to add to our already excellent library collection. We will start distributing the birthday books in the month of November. If you missed out on the opportunity to support the program this year, you may consider purchasing books at the upcoming book fair and donate the books to either the library or your child's classroom. If you have any questions, email Stacey.tavel@gmail.com.

EARTH DOME ASSEMBLY

On Monday, October 2, the Earthdome was brought to Hartshorn school and inflated inside the gym. All grades, 2 classes at a time, were treated to a fun, educational whirlwind tour not only around the globe but inside as well. Mr. Charles spoke about the continents, oceans, deserts and mountains. He told stories about each region including fun facts about movie locations set in far off lands. Mr. Charles also showed the children beautiful photos of animals from the continents some of which the children recognized and some they were introduced to, such as the PINK DOLPHIN and the WHALE SHARK! And the highlight of the day, they were able to go inside the globe to get a better view of the Northern Hemisphere and learn more fun facts.

MILLBURN GREEN SCHOOLS

WATER BOTTLE FILLING STATIONS

Thanks to the generosity and efforts of PTOs and the BOE, water bottle filling stations are now available at ALL Millburn Township elementary schools and Millburn Middle School! Please encourage your child(ren) to stay healthy and hydrated by bringing reusable bottles to school in lieu of disposable water bottles or sugary drinks.

 Some facts about bottled water:

  • Tap water is SAFER than bottled water. The belief that bottled water is better than tap water is driven by a multimillion-dollar industry marketing effort. Bottled water is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration; whereas tap water is regulated more strictly by the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Bottled water consumers are often drinking tap water that has been processed, packaged and shipped, damaging our environment and ultimately costing up to thousands of times the price of drinking this same water straight from the tap.
  • Bottling companies often take water from sources that local residents depend on for drinking and recreation, thus reducing the availability of local resources for others that depend on them.
  • One study found that the manufacture, production and transportation of bottled water uses 1,100 to 2,000 times more energy than the treatment and distribution of tap water.
  • Most plastic water bottles are not recycled (only 29% in 2017).
